The Swedenborg Society is pleased to announce a forthcoming site-responsive exhibition of drawings by Peter Cartwright. Developed from a series of observational sketches, Peter’s abstract drawings will be on display throughout the Society’s Grade II listed building and mark the completion of his year long Residency at Swedenborg House. Downplaying the normal sense of hierarchy between the work and the space, the works will be unframed and placed in equivical and sometimes playful relation with the building and the context from which they first emerged. In this manner the exhibition marks a subtle shift in Peter’s normal working practice. 53 drawings are to be included in total (43 black and white and 10 colour).
One of the leading artists to emerge from the Royal College of Art, a contemporary of David Hockney and R B Kitaj, PETER CARTWRIGHT has exhibited widely throughout the UK, and his work has been purchased by the Arts Council England and East Midlands Arts. Describing his methods Cartwright has written: ‘In my work I am preoccupied with the endless question of issues of abstraction and imagery. I make intense unpremeditated responses through drawing, to fragments, objects and situations, creating a stock of images that feed the working process. In my paintings, watercolours, and drawings, work continues in a state of flux, of exploration’.
Exhibition opening: Thursday 17 October, 6- 9 pm. Refreshments will also be served. This event will form part of the Bloomsbury Festival 2013 and is organized in association with the Bend in the River Gallery. Please RSVP to nora@swedenborg.org.uk
